Sudbury's Devon Kershaw turned in the best distance World Cup result of his career in the a 30km skate over the weekend in Rybinsk, Russia. Even more impressive was the fact that Kershaw was less than 6 seconds behind the winner in what was a mad scramble to the finish. Kershaw was in contention with the day's surprise winner, Tor Arne Hetland, for the complete race. Hetland, the 2002 Olympic gold medallist for Norway in the sprint, does not normally show his speed in events at long as 30km, although he can be a regular on the distance podium up to 15km. Hetland beat out Finland's Ville Nousiainen by half a second for his first win of the season, with Italian Pietro Piller Cottrer taking the final step on the podium. Kershaw had a similar sprint finish in the Falun pursuit 2 years ago where the mass sprint finish resulted in 16th place and only a few seconds off the win. The close pack and quick finishing Rybinsk race is a great warm-up for the upcoming Tour-du-Ski which will see 8 races packed into only 10 days. Kershaw is looking forward to the Tour as an all-around contender.
